Gators Come Up Short Against Bryn Mawr

Baltimore, MD – College of Notre Dame Women’s Soccer comes up just short against Bryn Mawr College 1-0 in their final regular season game of the 2010 season.

Junior Ashley Cumberland took a few moments before the game to honor senior Jessica Rohaly for her tireless dedication to the team. The senior also provided great leadership to the younger players who have joined the team over the last several seasons.

Allison Terry and Melinda Daugherty played well the entire game, but exceptionally well in the opening forty-five minutes. The Owls would outshoot the Gators 20-1 in the opening half, but the back line and Daugherty were solid and did not allow a goal. Daugherty came out strong and collected several balls crossed into the box. The sophomore also made an excellent driving save to tip the strike by the Owls just wide of the goal. College of Notre Dame’s strong play defensively sent the game into halftime tied at 0-0.

Ashley Cumberland’s speed both on and off the ball sparked the Gators attack. The midfielder penetrated Bryn Mawr’s defensive line, but a last second tackle by the Owls turned Cumberland away. Mierra Pratt had another good opportunity at goal for College of Notre Dame, but Bryn Mawr’s keeper made the strong save. Daugherty came up huge for the Gators with about ten minutes left in regulation tipping a ball over just over the cross bar to preserve the tie.

College of Notre Dame sped up their attacking play in the final ten minutes in hopes of scoring a late goal for the victory. The increased attack became a nuisance for the Owls defense. Bryn Mawr used a counter-attack to break through the Gators defense and find the back of the goal with thirty-three seconds left in regulation.

Daugherty recorded 23 saves in the loss.
