Bel Air, MD – College of Notre Dame of Maryland softball comes up shorts against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Neumann University on Monday afternoon.
Game won was an exciting game to watch because there was strong pitching and excellent defensive plays by both teams. Whitney Nixon (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk) hit a single in the top of the second inning, but the Gators could not generate a run.
Kirsten Smulovitz (Fallston, MD/Towson Catholic) was given the ball for Notre Dame. The sophomore was impressive holding Neumann scoreless through the first three innings. The Knights would get on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Gator batters could not get their timing against Neumann’s Rachel Purpuro and would be held hitless for the remainder of the game. Smulovitz continued to dominate the Knight’s hitters through the seventh inning recording five strikeouts on the game. The Gators fell 3-0 in game one.
Notre Dame was unable to control the Knights’ offense in game two. Neumann jumped out to an early advantage and the Gators would not recover. Smulovitz recorded the only hit of the game, a single in the top of the first inning. On the defensive side of the ball Sam Smith (Baltimore, MD/Towson Catholic) recorded eight putouts while Ashley Taylor (Edgewood, MD/Harford Tech) posted two putouts and two assists.
