Scranton, PA – College of Notre Dame of Maryland softball drops both games to Marywood University on Sunday afternoon.
The Gators got on the scoreboard early in game one. Kirsten Smulovitz (Fallston, MD/Towson Catholic) reached on a bunt single down the first base line. She then put herself in scoring position by stealing second base. Whitney Nixon (Baltimore, MD/Dundalk) advanced Smulovitz to third on an infield single. The sophomore scored the only Notre Dame run on an error by the Pacers third baseman.
Notre Dame would pick up three more hits over the next four innings but were unable to advance the runners into scoring position. The Gators fell to Marywood 10-1 in the open game of the doubleheaders.
Game two of the doubleheader displayed some excellent defensive plays by the Notre Dame fielders. Leading the defense was centerfielder Mindy Daugherty (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll). The sophomore made several strong catches on ball deep into the outfield. Daugherty finished the game with five putouts. Nixon recorded the only hit of the game for Notre Dame a single to left field. Marywood picked up a 12-0 victory of the Gators in game two.
Notre Dame hosts Cabrini College on Wednesday, April 20th at 3:30pm in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up.
