Swimming tops Gallaudet, 68-53, in home finale

Baltimore, Md. – Notre Dame of Maryland University moved to 4-3 on the year with a 68-53 win over Gallaudet University in non-conference swimming action Wednesday night in LeClerc Pool.

Senior Melanie Moscoso-Meiller was recognized by her team in her final home meet. Moscoso (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Los Pinos) won the 500 free (6:19.00) and earned a second place finish in the 1000 free (12:42.16) and touched in fourth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 3:06.25.

Shannon Berry won the 200 free (2:12.60) and the 100 free (1:00.71) while earning second place points in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:08.31. The junior from Pasadena teamed with Jessi Duffy, Faith Jones, and Kristine Chen to earn first place in the 160 medley relay with a time of 1:37.87. Duffy (Fr., Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) earned three first place individual finishes, in the 100 back (1:06.66), 40 free (21.47), and the 200 back (2:22.35), while Jones (Jr., Glen Arm/Greater Grace Christian Academy) won the 100 and 200 breaststroke, with times of 1:15.94 and 2:43.78, respectively. Chen (Fr., Indian Head/Henry E. Lackey) gave the Gators points by finishing second in the 200 free (2:25.47) and the 200 fly (2:44.50) and third in the 100 fly (1:13.91). 

Freshman Morgan Wheaton (Cape May, N.J./Cape May Tech) finished the 1000 free in 13:41.94 to earn third place, while picking up second in the 500 free with a time of 6:42.41. Classmate Bridget Aker (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) took third in the 100 back (1:24.46) and second in the 40 free (23:25) while Annie Bassford (Ridge/Great Mills) had a personal best in the 200 breast with a time of 3:39.56.

Gallaudet was paced by freshman Alexandra Polivanchuk, who won the 1000 free (12:11.72), the 200 fly (2:29.18), and the 100 fly (1:01.69). Polivanchuk's time in the 100 fly broke a pool record set in 1997 by M. Goodwin of  St. Mary's (Md.)

The Gators swim again Saturday, January 28 against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) competitor Hollins University in their final dual meet of the 2011-2012 season.  Last year, Notre Dame topped Hollins in Baltimore, 62-51.

Both teams will then prepare for the ODAC Championship, which will be held in Greensboro, N.C., from February 10-12, 2012.
