Basketball Opens Season With Big Win

Box Score Baltimore, Md. --  The Notre Dame of Maryland University basketball team opened their 2014-15 season with a 63-16 victory over Bryn Mawr College in Saturday's first game of the Women's College Tip-Off Tournament.

The Gators were led by freshman Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall), with 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists.  Freshman Allyson Whitacre (Jarretsville, Md. / North Harford) added nine points and paced the team with seven steals.  Freshmen Zaria Comer (Leesburg, Md./Tuscarora) and Jennifer Whiting (Perry Hall, Md.) each chipped in with eight, with Whiting also snatching four steals.  Senior Marylu Ortiz (Oceanside, Calif./ El Camino) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while posting a career high seven points.  

Notre Dame jumped out early, taking an 11-3 lead six minutes into the game.  The Gators would continue to pull ahead throughout the first half, claiming a 33-8 lead at the break.  After halftime, the hosts would continue their pace eventually securing the 63-16 victory.  

In the contest, Notre Dame showcased their new depth, as all but one player would score in the game while the Gators received 32 points from their bench.  

The Gators will return to action on Sunday as they will host College of New Rochelle in the championship game at 3 p.m.   Prior to the game, Bryn Mawr College will take on Cedar Crest College in the consolation game.
