Strong Second Half Fuels Basketball Victory

Box Score Baltimore, Md – Trinity Washington University erased an 11 point first-half lead for Notre Dame of Maryland University, but the Gators would hold on and take a 69-61 win and their second straight victory of the season.

TWU jumped out to an early lead Saturday, but was short lived when freshman Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall) hit her first of six three pointers of the night.  The Gators would maintain the lead for the majority of the first half until Trinity cut a once 11 point lead to go ahead one in the final seconds of the first half, 37-36.

The Gators and Tigers traded points through the first 13 minutes of the second half having seven lead changes and four tied scores.  Back-to-back three pointers by Roche and freshman Shelby Cochran (Wilmington, Del. / Hodgson Vo-Tech) at the seven minute mark fueled the Gators to take and eventually secure the lead.  Trinity continued to apply pressure, but the Notre Dame offense proved too much as the Gators took the game, 69-61.

Roche had a career night, scoring a career high 20 points, shooting 75% from beyond the arc with six three pointers.  Freshman Zaria Comer (Leesburg, Va. / Tuscarora) had her fifth career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while freshman Allyson Whitacre (Jarrettsville, Md. / North Harford) added 12 points going two for three from beyond the arc and a career high four assists.  Freshman Meghan O'Connor (Oxford, Pa) grabbed a career high eight rebounds and led the team with five assists.

Notre Dame will now hit the road as they travel to the Pittsburgh area for two days of basketball.  On Monday, the Gators take on Geneva College and visit Chatham University on Tuesday in their third non-conference matchup in four days.
