Gators Claim Tip-Off Tournament Championship

Box Score New Rochelle, N.Y. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland basketball team claimed their second straight victory, winning the Women's College Tip-Off Tournament against College of New Rochelle, 67-55.  This game posed as a rematch from last season where the Gators fell to the Blue Angels in the championship game.

The Gators were led in scoring by sophomore Zaria Comer (Lessburg, Va. / Tuscarora) and freshman Justice Walrath (Severna Park, Md.) with 16 points each with Walrath going two for two from beyond the arc and three assists.  Freshman Justine Mudiay (Baltimore, Md. / Cristo Rey Jesuit) also had a big night for Notre Dame adding 15 points with one three pointer.  On the boards, junior Naimani Staley (Silver Spring, Md. / Brick) paced the Gators with nine rebounds while adding a team high three assists.  As a team, Notre Dame shot 60% from the free throw line and had 34 total rebounds.

Notre Dame jumped out to an early lead going up by 10 through the first five minutes of play seeing four different Gators on the board in scoring.  Through the entirety of the second quarter, the Gators only gave up four points, heading into the second quarter with a 14-4 lead.  In the second quarter, the Gators and Blue Angels would trade points with New Rochelle cutting the lead down to eight in the eight minute mark.  With six minutes left in the second quarter, a three pointer by Staley would lead the charge for the Gators as they would take a 21 point lead into halftime, 39-18.

With just under a minute into the third quarter, a jumper by Mudiay would see the Gators with their biggest lead of the night at 23.  New Rochelle would fight back, cutting the lead to nine with just under three minutes left in the third, outscoring Notre Dame, 11-22.  The Gators would close out the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Blue Angels 17-15, claiming a 67-55 victory and being named the Women's College Tip-Off Tournament Champions.  Zaria Comer was awarded the Tournament MVP honors with voting coming from tournament coaches.

The Gators come home Saturday, November 21 as they host Hollins University.  Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
