Basketball Sees Close Loss

Box Score Baltimore, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University basketball team hosted Keystone College Saturday in their last Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup of the year.  A well fought game for Notre Dame saw 11 lead changes and six tied score, but the Gators would fall short, losing to the Giants, 67-57.

The Gators were led in scoring by sophomore Zaria Comer (Leesburg, Va. / Tuscarora) who recorded a team and individual season high, 23 points, going 5-6 from the free throw line with six rebounds and a block.  Sophomore Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall) posted a team season high four three pointers, shoot 100% from beyond the arc and ended the day with 16 points.  Freshman Justice Walrath (Severna Park, Md.) had a team game and individual high, 10 rebounds with six points and four assists while junior Naimani Staley (Silver Spring, Md. / Brick) posted a game high, five steals with four assists.  As a team the Gators, saw season highs in made free throws (14), steals (13), and made three pointers (5) while recording a free throw percentage of 70% in their second game in a row.

Notre Dame would come out strong seeing a quick two from Comer off a rebound and ball advancement from Walrath.  Keystone would answer back, recording two points on the opposite end, for the first of three tied scores in the first quarter.  An offensive rebounds by Comer and put back would see the Gators take a 10-9 lead just above the six minute mark.  A minute later, the Giants would take a one point lead, but the lead wouldn't last long as Walrath would down a quick three pointer to see the Gators up two with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.  With two minutes left in the first quarter, the Gators would go up by four with a free throw by Walrath.  To close out the last two minutes, the Giants would go on a 6-1 run, seeing a first quarter score, 17-18, Keystone.

To open up the second quarter, Notre Dame would retake the lead off a three pointer by Roche.  The made basket by Roche would spur a 6-0 run, seeing the Gators with their largest lead of the night, 24-18.  Notre Dame would continue the pressure through the entirely of the second quarter, going into halftime with a two point lead, 30-28.  With just under eight minutes to play in the thrid quarter, a good three pointer by Roche would put the Gators up five, 35-30.  The Giants would return with three pointer cutting the Gator lead to two.  At the 5:43 minute mark, a good jumper by Keystone would tie the game at 35.  For the next two minutes Notre Dame and Keystone would trade points, again see the score tied, 38 each.  A made three pointer with 2:17 left in the third by the Giants would put Keystone ahead for good.  Keystone would close out the fourth quarter, claiming a 67-57 victory over Notre Dame.

The Gators next host Geneva College for their last home game of the year, Wednesday, December 8.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
