Gators Solid Effort Falls Short

Box Score Baltimore, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University basketball faced off against non-conference opponent Geneva College Tuesday night.  A solid effort by the Gators fell short as they lost, 68-59.

The Gators were led by sophomore Zaria Comer (Leesburg, Va. / Tuscarora) who recorded her third double-double of the season, notching 19 point and 19 rebounds with one block.  Comer went 5-7 from the free throw line, shooting 71% for the season.  Sophomore Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall) added nine points in the effort, with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals while junior Naimani Staley (Silver Spring, Md. / Blair) tallied nine post with one three pointer.  Sophomore Ashley Guy (Leonardtwon, Md.) posted eight points for the Gators with five rebounds while going 2-2 from the free throw line.

A back and forth effort for both the Gators and Golden Tornadoes saw Geneva up three to close out the first quarter of play, 18-15.  In the second quarter, Notre Dame struggled to find the basket as Geneva would outscore the Gators 16-6, taking a 13 point lead into halftime, 34-21.

Geneva would continue the pressure into the third quarter taking their largest lead of the night at 19 with just under six minutes to play in the third, 45-26, but a good layup by Staley would help spark the Gators back into the game on their very next possession.  With just four minutes remaining in the third quarter, a three point play for Comer would cut the Geneva lead to 11, 45-34.  After trading points over the next four minutes, a last second layup by freshman Justice Walrath (Severna Park, Md.) would bring the third quarter to an end, Geneva up seven, 51-44.

Through the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, the Golden Tornadoes would out score the Gators 4-0, again taking a 12 point lead, 56-44.  Over the the next two minutes, a trio of open looks by Roche and Guy and free throws by Comer would cut the Geneva lead to just four points with 3:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.  The Gators could not close out the game as eight point off of free throws by the Golden Tornadoes would keep the game just out of reach.  Notre Dame would fall to Geneva 68-59 to end their home campaign of 2015.

The Gators now hit the road for two away contests to close out the year, the first coming Saturday as Notre Dame takes on Mary Baldwin College.  Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
