Box Score Baltimore, Md. -- Notre Dame basketball secured their second consecutive and seventh victory of the season as they defeated Colonial States Athletic Conference rival Baptist Bible College, 51-27 in their annual Pink Game.
The Gators were led in scoring by freshman
Allyson Whitacre (Jarrettsville, Md./ North Harford) who recorded a team game high 14 points, shooting 7-7 from the free throw line with four steals. Freshman
Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall) notched eight points on the win with two three-pointers and four steals.
Sophomore
Naimani Staley (Silver Spring, MD / Montgomery Blair) and freshman
Ashley Guy (Leonardtown, Md.) both tallied six points on the day with Staley shooting 2-4 from beyond the arc and adding a team high four assists. Guy led the Gators on the boards, reeling in 14 rebounds while freshman
Meghan O'Connor (Oxford, Pa.) added six
To open the game, the Gators jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Leading the way was Staley who drained a three-pointer assisted by Roche. After a missed jumper by Baptist Bible on the opposite end, Roche scored a quick two with a feed from Jones. A steal by Whitacre led to a foul by the Defenders and put her on the line for her first two points of the night.
The Gators would hold the Defenders to only one point through a three minute stretch until a foul shot by the Defenders at the 11:40 minute mark saw the score, 9-2. An offensive rebound and put back by
Jennifer Whiting (Perry Hall, Md.) on the opposite end notched a quick basket for the Gators.
A three-pointer by Staley at 11:04 would put Notre Dame up 12, but Baptist Bible would charge back going on an eight point run to cut the Gator lead to four. Notre Dame would stop the run by Baptist Bible when Guy converted her steal into jumper.
With 4:35 remaining
Marylu Ortiz (Oceanside, Calif. / El Camino), reeling in an offensive rebound, would see an and-one opportunity, making her first of three free throws in the game. Back and forth action by both teams would yield a pause in scoring until Baptist Bible would chip in a layup at the close of the first half. The Gators would hold a seven point lead over the Defenders at half, 19-12.
At the start of the second half, Baptist Bible would come out strong, outscoring Notre Dame 8-0, taking a one point lead with a pair of free throws at the 15:59 minute mark. The Defenders lead would be short lived when Guy would convert her offensive rebound for two with 15:30 remaining.
A burst of energy by Notre Dame would send them on a 7-0 run; regaining their momentum, but Baptist Bible would continue to fight back. After a pair of free throws and a jumper with 11:47 left on the clock the Defenders would get back within four points of the Gators, 28-24.
20 seconds later, Roche would answer with a three pointer, putting the Gators back up by seven. Adding a pair of free throws and a jumper, O'Connor would advance the score to 35-24 by the 9:25 minute mark.
Two free throws by Baptist Bible with 7:52 remaining would see them within nine for the second time in the half, but free throws by Whitacre on the opposite end would help seal the win for the Gators.
In the last 7 minutes of play, the Gators would go on a 14-1 run, securing their fourth conference victory of the season, 51-27. In the game, Notre Dame out rebounded Baptist Bible 46-33 and shot a season high, 92% from the free throw line.
The Gators will close out their 2014-15 season Wednesday night as they host CSAC opponent Marywood University on Senior Night.
