Soccer Sets Program History With Sixth Win To Open Season

Box Score Baltimore, Md.  --  The soccer team for Notre Dame of Maryland University has made history as the squad defeated Trinity Washington University 4-0 for their sixth straight win to open the 2015 season.

The win bests the previous record set in 2002, when that year's squad won their first five games.  The six straight wins is also tied for the third longest streak the program has seen.  The shutout marks their fifth shutout this year, the most since the 2006 season.

The Gators were led by freshman Meghan Conner's (Huntingtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) two goals.  Freshman Lindsey Rehak (Baltimore, Md./Redeemer Classical Christian) knocked in her fourth goal of the season while sophomore Lizzie Balog (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added her second of the year.  Junior Cristina Barrios-Lopez (Glen Burnie, Md.) and senior Savannah Ferrara (Sykesville, Md.) both chipped in with an assist.

Notre Dame would outshoot the Tigers 17-3, pushing their season total to a 181-27 advantage and have outscored opponents 29-1.

Conner would open the scoring early, scoring just 3:05 into the game.  Freshman goalkeeper Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard Dale) would kick the ball downfield, which Conner managed to take and weave her way through the defense before settling the ball in the middle of the field to find the back of the net.

In the 15th minute, Rehak would knock in her goal from outside the box after stealing the ball away from a TWU player.  Conner would then score her 14th goal this year in the 23rd minute, booting a ball through the TWU goalie's hands off a pass from Barrios-Lopez.

The Gators took the 3-0 lead into halftime, allowing three shots through the first 45 minutes.  Throughout the second half, Notre Dame's defense would not allow a shot, but the hosts would take six more opportunities.   After a TWU foul allowed a free kick, Ferrara would kick the ball into the box, allowing Balog to head it over the goalies reach to give Notre Dame a 4-0 lead and their sixth straight victory.

The Gators will look to extend their record on Saturday as they open Colonial States Athletic Conference play by visiting Keystone College.
