Centenary Keeps Game Just Out Of Reach For Notre Dame

Box Score Baltimore, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University basketball team hosted Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Centenary College Saturday afternoon for their second conference matchup of the week.  The Gators would put up a solid effort against the Cyclones, but an early lead by Centenary would keep the game just out of reach as Notre Dame would fall, 63-53.

The Gators were led by freshman Justice Walrath (Severna Park, Md.) who recorded a career high, 18 points.  Walrath also posted game highs in steals (4) and assists (3) while adding six rebounds.  On the boards sophomore Ashley Guy (Leonardtown, Md.) and freshman Justine Mudiay (Baltimore, Md. / Cristo Rey Jesuit) led Notre Dame with seven rebounds apiece with Mudiay adding nine points to the effort.  Junior Naimani Staley (Silver Spring, Md. / Blair) tallied seven points with two three-pointers, adding six rebounds in the game.  As a team, Notre Dame recorded 41 rebounds and 14 steals, the Gators seventh game this season with 10 or more steals.

The Gators opened up scoring off a layup by Walrath fed by Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall).  On the opposite end, the Cyclones would even up the game, 2-2.  Over the next five minutes, Centenary would hold Notre Dame scoreless, going on a 12-0 run.  With 3:47 left in the first quarter, Walrath would again find the basket off a assist by Shelby Cochran (Wilmington, Del. / Hodgson Vo-Tech), the Gators down, 12-4.  Even through the rest of the quarter, Notre Dame would head into the second quarter down, 17-9.

With 2:41 left in the second quarter, a three-pointer by Walrath would cut the Cyclone lead to three, 27-24, but Centenary would answer with four points to close out the quarter.   In the second and third quarter, Notre Dame and Centenary would rally back and forth, each scoring 15 points.  To open the fourth quarter, Notre Dame would be down eight, 47-39.  With 3:45 left in the fourth quarter, the Cyclones would take their largest lead of the night at 15, but Notre Dame would start to chip away at the Centenary lead.  With 21 seconds remaining, a jumper by Roche would cut the Cyclone lead to eight, but the Gators rally would fall short as time would expire.  The Gators would fall 63-53, a move to 1-6 in conference play.

Notre Dame next hosts Cairn University, Wednesday.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
