Box Score Washington, D.C. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland basketball team travelled to non-conference and local rival, Trinity Washington University. In the game, four players recorded double-figures in scoring, but late baskets by the Tigers would keep the game out of reach for the Gators as they fell, 69-74.
Notre Dame was led in scoring by sophomore
Zaria Comer (Leesburg, Va. / Tuscarora) who recorded 19 points with seven rebounds and two blocks. Freshman
Justine Mudiay (Baltimore, Md. / Cristo Rey Jesuit) notched a career-high, 18 points, while going 8-for-14 from the floor. Sophomore
Stephanie Roche (Baltimore, Md. / Perry Hall) finished the night with 13 points for her seventh game, in her last nine, recording 10 or more points.
In her second double-double this season, sophomore
Ashley Guy (Leonardtown, Md.) tallied 12 points and led the Gators on the boards with 10 rebounds. Guy went 5-for-7 from the floor, making both her attempted free throws while adding three assists and two steals. Freshman
Justice Walrath (Severna Park, Md.) paced the offense with six assists adding five rebounds.
Notre Dame would jump out to an early lead to open the first quarter, with three Gators finding the basket, 10-2. Over the next four minutes, Trinity would chip away at the Notre Dame lead, getting within one point after a 9-2 run, Gators up 12-11.
With 1:06 left in the first quarter, a three-pointer and layup by Roche, back-to-back, would put Notre Dame back up by six. A string of missed opportunities by the Gators would allow the Tigers to go on a 7-0 run in the last minute of the first, giving Trinity a one point lead going into the second quarter, 17-18.
A quick three-pointer by Mudiay to open the second quarter would put Notre Dame back up by two, 20-18. With 9:20 on the clock, Trinity would down one of two free-throws getting within one of Notre Dame. On the opposite end, Comer would add two for the Gators, Notre Dame now holding a three point lead.
With 8:56 left in the half, a three-point play for Trinity would see the score tied at 22. On the opposite end, Walrth would down her only three-pointer of the night, Notre Dame up 25-22. Over the next five minutes, the Gators would hold the lead after back and forth play, but with 3:32 left in the second quarter Trinity would score two, tying the game at 30.
Freshman
Daishawna McNeil (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) would help Notre Dame regain the lead, downing two free-throws for her only points of the night, 32-30. But with 3:02 on the clock, Trinity would put two on the board, tying the game again.
After two scoreless minutes, Trinity would find the basket off a fast break, taking the lead, Notre Dame down 32-34. With 54 seconds remaining in the first half, a layup by Roche, assisted by Comer would see the score tied again at 34 apiece.
After a made three-pointer by the Tigers, Comer would put up two to close out the half. Notre Dame would go into halftime down one point, 36-37.
For the second quarter in a row, Mudiay would post the first points of the quarter for the Gators, helping Notre Dame regain the lead. After two lead changes, Notre Dame would hold a five point lead with 2:27 left in the third, 50-45.
To close out the third quarter, Trinity would crawl back getting within one of Notre Dame, 54-53 to open the fourth quarter.
Trinity would score in the first minute of the fourth quarter and would eventually go up by three over Notre Dame. After a pair of free-throws by Guy and layup by Roche, the Gators would regain the lead 58-57 with 7:29 left in the game.
With 6:30 left in the fourth quarter, a layup by Guy would send the Gators up by three, but the lead would be short lived as the Tigers would go on a five point run, holding a two point lead over Notre Dame, 60-62. Guy would again find the basket, tying the game for the fifth and final time at 62 apiece with four minutes remaining.
Again Trinity would go on a short run, scoring seven over the next two minutes, Notre Dame down, 62-69. With 2:19 on the clock, a basket by Comer would snap the Tiger run. After a missed opportunity by Trinity, Roche would find the basket, getting the Gators within three with just under two minutes left in the game.
On the opposite end, Trinity would score two, now holding a five point lead with 1:20 left on the clock. With 46 seconds left in the game, Comer would score her only three-pointer of the night to get within two points of Trinity.
To stop the clock, the Gators would have to foul, putting the Tigers on the free-throw line. Trinity would score three of six free-throws to close out the game. Notre Dame would fall to Trinity, 69-74.
To close out their season, Notre Dame will host Cabrini Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
