Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. -- Notre Dame of Maryland University jumped out to a 5-1 lead against Marywood University in the second game of a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader but the Gators were unable to hold onto the lead as they fell the Pacers in both games.
Senior
Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) paced the Gators with four hits, including a home run, four runs batted in, and also scored two runs. She also threw eight strikeouts against the Pacers in the nightcap.
Junior M
organ Ward (Randallstown, Md./Western Tech) and freshman
Lilly Gordon (Delta, Pa./Kennard-Dale) added two runs on two hits each. Junior
Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) chipped in with two hits and two RBI's.
In the opener, the Gators faced an earlier deficit heading into the fifth inning where they would score two runs. After Ward and Gordon singled, Cevora knocked both runners in. However, the two runs would not be enough as Marywood captured an 8-2 game win victory.
In the second game, the Pacers took a lead with one run in the first inning, but Notre Dame responded by taking their first lead of the day. Cevora started the inning with a single, and was followed by freshman
Paola Castillo (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/Escuela International Sampedrana) who hit another single. Winkelman continued the rally with her own single up the middle to score Cevora and Castillo.
The Gators then added to their lead in the second inning. Gordon would reach base on a fielder's choice then scored on an error by the Marywood third baseman, hit by junior
Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.). Cevora followed it with a two-run home run, her third homer of the season, to give Notre Dame a 5-1 lead after two innings.
Unfortunately the Pacers responded with six runs in the third inning, and added three more in the fourth to re-take the lead at 10-5. They would then add another run in the seventh to make it 11-5. The Gators entered the bottom of the seventh inning looking to rally. With two outs, Ward singled and advanced to third on a throwing error by the left fielder. Freshman
Brenda Diazdelvalle (College Park, Md./Rockville) followed with a single to score Ward and move the Gators closer. But it would not be enough as a fly out by the next Notre Dame batter ended the game, giving Marywood an 11-6 victory.
The Gators will look to regroup as they enjoy a break from action before returning to Druid Hill Park to take on Keystone College on Saturday.
