Notre Dame Secures Pair Of Conference Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Baltimore, Md. -- The Notre Dame of Maryland University softball team notched two Colonial States Athletic Conference victories over Cairn University Saturday, 22-2 and 20-6.  The Gators have opened up this season to their best conference record since 2008, 3-1 in the CSAC.

Freshmen Samantha Kastner (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and Jazmyne Taylor (Tyrone, Ga./Sandy Creek) led the Gators with six hits each, while Kastner added six runs batted in.

Freshman Madison King (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) paced Notre Dame with 10 runs batted in, with two doubles.  Senior Tawny Cevora (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) added five hits to the effort with one double and one triple.

Cevora finished the day with seven strikeouts with King adding five.

The Gators would open up their first game of their doubleheader notching 11 runs in the first inning.  Cevora was the first to cross the plate after a walk by junior Wendi Winkelman (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco).  Notre Dame would score their 11 runs off four hits, one each by Taylor, Kastner, Cevora and King.  

Cairn would hold Notre Dame scoreless through the next two innings, but the Gators would find momentum in the fourth inning, scoring 11 runs off 10 hits.  Junior Margaret Pedersen (Brick, N.J.), Cevora, and Kastner tallied 2 runs batted in apiece while Pedersen and Cevora notched two runs each.

In the win, King would record a strikeout to close out the first four innings.

In game two, the Gators would see a tied score through the first inning and a half at one apiece, but Notre Dame would add on the runs in the bottom of the second.  Notre Dame would score five runs off of three hits with King tallying three runs batted in off a base clearing double.

In the third, Notre Dame would again score five off of four hits.  Pedersen led off with a single and reaching third base off an error by the Highlanders.  Cevora, Kastner, and Brenda Diazdelvalle (College Park, Md./Rockville) would all notch singles and runs batted in to round out the third inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Gators would secure the win, adding nine runs off of nine hits.  Seven Gators would record singles with Winkelman and King with two apiece.  In the top of the fifth, Cairn would rally back adding five runs, but back to back groundouts by the Highlanders would seal Notre Dame's second victory of the day.

Cevora notched a strikeout in every inning, with two in the first and third innings.

In the victories, every Gator with an at bat recorded a hit, a run and a run batted in.

With the pair of victories, Notre Dame advances to 7-5 and 3-1 in the CSAC.  The Gators next face Neumann University on Wednesday on the road.  The doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
