Notre Dame Comeback Falls Short

Box Score La Plume, Pa. – The Notre Dame of Maryland basketball team traveled to Keystone College for a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup.  The Gators and Giants would see the score tied at the end of the third quarter, but free-throws by Keystone in the closing two minutes would keep the game just out of reach as Notre Dame fell, 59-62.

The Gators had three players record double-figures scoring, led by junior Zaria Comer who posted her third double-double of the season and 20th for her career with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Comer had three blocks in the game and now leads the CSAC in blocks per game with 2.7.  Sophomore Justine Mudiay recorded 18 points, going 6-for-8 from the free throw line.  This is her fourth consecutive game recording 10 or more points.  Junior Stephanie Roche added 11 points for the Gators, recording three three-pointers while junior Dania Taylor led the Gators in assists with six. 

Keystone would be the first to score in the opening minute of play.  Mudiay would score first for the Gators off an assist my Taylor.  With five minute left in the first quarter, a pair of free-throws by Mudiay would give the Gators their first lead of the night, 7-6. 

The Giants would regain the lead 30 seconds later, but on the opposite end of the floor, a jumper by Taylor from Comer would see the Gators up again, 9-8.  A free throw by Keystone with three and a half minutes left in the quarter would see the game tied at nine apiece.  In the closing three minutes of the first quarter, Keystone would outscore Notre Dame, 6-2, the Gators down, 11-15.

Over the first three minutes of the second quarter, Keystone would jump out to a nine-point lead.  The Giants and Gators would trade points over the second quarter, but in the final minute a layup by Comer would cut the Keystone lead to seven, going into halftime Notre Dame down, 22-29.

To open the third quarter, Mudiay would score the first three points for the Gators, chipping away at the Keystone lead.  With three and a half minutes left in the third, a three-pointer by Roche would get Notre Dame within one, 34-35. 

The Giants would down a free throw to again go up by two, but a pair of free throws by Comer would see the score tied at 36 apiece.  In the game, Comer would go 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.  To close out the last minute of play, Keystone and Notre Dame would trade free throws to go into the fourth quarter tied, 38 all.  In the third quarter, the Gators would hold the Giants to just nine points, outscoring them 16-9.

Through the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, the Giants would surge to an eight-point lead, Notre Dame down, 38-46.  The Gators would fight back and again chip away at the Keystone lead.  With 26 seconds left in the game a pair of free throws by Comer would get Notre Dame within three, down 54-57.

After trading points, a three pointer in the final three seconds by Roche would see Notre Dame get within two, but their comeback would fall short as time expired.  The Gators would fall, 62-59.  In the final two minute of play, Keystone would use eight free throws to keep Notre Dame just out of reach.

The Gators will return home next week as the host Cabrini Wednesday and Cedar Crest Saturday.
