Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Notre Dame basketball opened their home schedule to a standout victory over the Penn State - York Nittany Lions. In their first of two back-to-back home games this weekend, the Gators secured a 64-51 victory backed by a season high three-point performance.
Notre Dame had four player record double-figure points in the victory led by senior
Zaria Comer. Comer finished the game with 14 points, going 7-for-8 from the floor and picked up a season-high three blocks. Junior
Justine Mudiay tallied 12 points, going 2-for-3 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Also having a clutch night from beyond the arc, junior
Justice Walrath went 3-for-4 from the three and finished the night with a season-high 11 points. Freshman
Keyeria Dawson led the Gators on the boards with a career-high eight rebounds, while seniors
Ashley Guy and
Shelby Cochran added seven apiece. Freshman
Adrianna Fletcher first career points came off a three pointer late in the first quarter, while senior
Dania Taylor added two threes in the game.
In the start of the game, the Gators started off slow, getting into an early four-point hole. Back-to-back buckets by Guy and Comer saw the score tied at four apiece. Over the next minute and a half, PSU took another four-point lead over Notre Dame. A layup by Walrath and three-pointer by Fletcher on the next possession started a Gator 10-0 run. With 10 seconds remaining in the quarter, Taylor downed one of her two three-pointers to give Notre Dame a 14-8 lead.
Notre Dame continued the pressure to open the second quarter. The Gators used a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the night off a three-pointer from Walrath. With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, Notre Dame held a 12-point lead. But the Lions charged back, holding the Gators scoreless for the rest of the quarter. Notre Dame went into the half up eight, 31-23.
In the third frame, PSU started to chip away at the Gator lead, getting within five with three minutes off the clock. Walrath posted back-to-back three-pointers to get Notre Dame back up to an 11-point lead close of the halfway point of the third quarter. To close out the third, the Gators held firm to a nine-point lead, 48-39.
The unrelenting Gators held strong in the fourth quarter, eventually taking their largest lead of the night after to back-to-back free-throws from Justine Mudiay, 58-41. A free-throw with five seconds atthe end of the game by senior
Daishawna McNeil, helped seal the Gator victory, 64-51.
The Gator win today move the team to 2-3 overall this season. In a quick turnaround, Notre Dame will face local rival, Goucher College at home for a 1:00 p.m. start time tomorrow.
