Last Minute Rally Falls Short

Box Score Rosemont, Pa. – The Notre Dame of Maryland basketball team traveled to Rosemont College for their second Colonial States Athletic Conference match up of the season.  The Gators and Ravens would trade leads in the game, but late free-throws by Rosemont would keep the game out of reach as Notre Dame would fall, 79-84.

Three players recorded double-figures in scoring led by junior Zaria Comer who posted 22 points, going 10-for-13 from the floor.  Her 22 points puts her over the 800 career-point mark with five games left in the season.  Junior Dania Taylor added 17 points for the Gators and was two assists shy of a double-double, finishing the night with eight.  Sophomore Justine Mudiay finished the game with 16-points, going 7-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc while leading the team in steals with two.  On the boards, junior Shelby Cochran led Notre Dame with 14 rebounds, two shy of a career-high, and recorded six points.  As a team, Notre Dame shot 47.1% from the three-point line and 53.1% from the floor. 

To open the game, the Ravens would be the first to strike after four missed opportunities.  Rosemont would go up five through the first two minutes of play, but on the opposite end Mudiay would record the Gators first points of the night, downing her first three-pointer of the night. 

After missed opportunities by both teams, the Gators would again be down four with just under seven minutes left in the quarter.  On the opposite end of the floor, Comer would get the Gators within two off a layup from Ashley Guy.  A three-pointer by Stephanie Roche with just over five minutes left in the quarter would see the score tied at nine apiece.

The Ravens would use one of their seven first-half three-pointers to regain the lead on their next possession.  Back-to-back baskets by Taylor would help Notre Dame take a two-point lead.  The Gators would go on a nine-point run to hold an 18-12 lead with just over three-minutes left in the first.  To close out the quarter, Rosemont would outscore the Gators 10-6 to cut the lead to two, Gators up 24-22.

To open the second quarter, Notre Dame would post the first five-points of the game to hold a 29-22 lead with just over two-minutes into the quarter.  Over the next three-minutes, Rosemont would go on an 8-2 run to get within one of the Gators, but a layup by Taylor would add two, Gators up 33-30 with 5:14 left in the half.

Back-to-back three-pointer by Taylor and Daishawna McNeil would put the Gator lead to nine, with four minutes left in the half.  Over the next minute, Rosemont would score four, but Notre Dame would answer with six-straight points.  With a minute left in the half, the Gators would hold a 45-34 lead.  In the final seconds, Rosemont would down a three to close the half, Gators up 45-37.

To open the second half, Rosemont would charge back, cutting the Notre Dame lead to two, 45-43 with over eight-minutes left in the quarter.  Notre Dame would struggle to find the basket in the third quarter and with four-minutes left Rosemont would regain the lead, Gators down one, 50-51.  The Ravens would hold the Gators to 11 third quarter points and would close out the quarter with the lead, Notre Dame down, 56-64.

The Gators would open the fourth quarter, cutting the Rosemont lead to four with back-to-back baskets by Guy and Comer.  A three-pointer by the Ravens on the opposite end, would extend their lead to seven.  With just under seven minutes left in the game, Mudiay would down a jumper to cut the Rosemont lead to three.

After a basket by the Ravens with six minutes left in the game, Comer would down a three-pointer to get the Gators within two, 69-71.  Again the Ravens would go on a run, outscoring Notre Dame 7-0 over the next minute of play.  After rallying back, a rebound and jump shot by Cochran would get the Gators within three. 

Both Rosemont and Notre Dame would get looks at the basket, but with just under a minute to play, Mudiay would record a layup to cut the Rosemont lead to one point, Gators down, 79-80.  To stop the clock, Notre Dame would have to foul.  The Gators would put the Ravens on the line three times in the last minute and would be unable to regain the lead.  Rosemont would record four free-throws to close out the game, sealing the game.  Notre Dame would fall 79-84.

The Gator remain on the road this week as they travel to CSAC opponent Clarks Summit, Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
