Basketball Closes Out Season With a Win

Box Score Baltimore, Md.  – The Notre Dame of Maryland University basketball team closed out their 2016-17 campaign with a victory over Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent, Keystone College.  The conference win today, ties Notre Dame's conference win record with five.  Going into halftime with a five-point lead, the Gators held the Giant to just 21 second-half points to secure a 68-55 win. 

The Gators had four players record double-figures led by junior Zaria Comer who posted her third-consecutive and eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds, for her season-high.  Comer also finished the game with three blocks, securing Notre Dame's single season block record with 50.  Junior Ashley Guy posted a team game-high 16 points, for her third-highest performance this season.  She went 7-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.  Junior Dania Taylor and sophomore Justine Mudiay both recorded double-figures with Taylor tallying 13, going 3-for-4 from beyond they three-point line and adding a team-high, seven assists.  Mudiay posted six rebounds, while posting three assists and two steals.  Notre Dame finished the game with 40 rebounds and 17 assists. 

Lone senior, Stephanie Roche was honored prior to the start of today's game.  Graduating a year early, Steph is a three-year senior, completing her degree in Mathematics.   Steph made 63 appearances for the Gators, tallying over seventeen hundred court minutes.  In her career, she has recorded 539 points, 208 rebounds, 103 three-pointers, and 139 assists.  Steph's name appears in the Notre Dame record book seven times, holding records for most made three-pointers and highest three-point percentage in a game and career three-pointers made and attempted.  Steph has been named to the CSAC All-Academic Team several times over her career and is a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematic Honor Society.

Under the direction of first-year Head Coach, Tom Gizzi, Notre Dame saw major improvements this season.  As a team, the Gators averaged 8.6 more points a game over last season; recording a -4.0 win-margin over last year's, -13.04.  With the closer games and much more competitive play, the Gators suffered six losses this season under 10 points.  The team recorded higher rebound, free-throw, three-point, and field-goal percentages.  The Gators had 155 less turnovers, 20 more assists and 31 more field goals.  Notre Dame ends the season with three players recording over 200 points and three over 100 points. 

The Gators finish the season with an 8-15 overall and 5-11 conference record, finishing the season in ninth place for third consecutive season.  Only graduating one senior, Notre Dame will return four out of their five starters and their entire bench.
