Gators Win Rematch Against Immaculata

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Notre Dame of Maryland basketball posted back-to-back victories this week in Colonial States Athletic Conference play, claiming a thrilling victory against Immaculata University today, 66-60.  In a game with three lead changes and two tied scores, Notre Dame prevailed in the fourth quarter to help secure their third conference victory and sixth for the season.

Senior Zaria Comer led all scoring in the game, posting 22 points, going 10-for-12 from the floor.  This is her fifth 20+ game this season and her second consecutive.  She is also shooting 84.8% from the floor over her last three games. 

Senior Dania Taylor had a break out game, tying a season-high, 16 points, with her best shooting percentage of the season at 54.5%.  She also had a season-high and game-leading eight assists, while the team finished with 17.

On the boards, senior Ashley Guy reeled in 11 rebounds and had a game-high, three steals.  Taylor also posted seven rebounds, while the team finished with 35.  The Gators went 11-for-16 from the free-throw line, their best percentage this season.  Junior Justice Walrath led the team going 5-for-6 and finished the game with eight points.

In the first quarter, Notre Dame and Immaculata traded points, seeing the score tied twice in the first three minutes.  With five minute left in the quarter, the Mighty Macs held a four-point lead, but over the next two and a half minutes, the Gators went on a seven-point run to take a 15-10 lead with 2:35 left in the first. 

Good free throws by Immaculata to close out the first quarter saw Notre Dame with a narrow, 17-14 lead to open the second quarter.

Another pair of free-throw early in the second, helped the Mighty Macs cut the Gator lead to one.  Over the next four minutes, Notre Dame went on a 7-2 run to take a six-point lead, 24-18 with just over five to play in the first half. 

Immaculata held Notre Dame scoreless until the final minute of the second, to take a 25-24 lead.  A pair of free-throws by Walrath in the final seconds, helped Notre Dame get within one, going into halftime down, 26-27.

To open the third quarter, Notre Dame shooting went cold.  They went 1-4 in the first half of the third, letting the Mighty Macs take a solid lead. 

With just under five minutes to play, Immaculata hit a three-pointer to give the Gators their largest deficit of the game, 39-31.  But Notre Dame answered on the other end of the court.  A clutch three-pointer by senior Naimani Staley helped spark the Notre Dame offense, cutting the lead back down to five. 

With 2:07 left in the third, freshman Keyeria Dawson downed another three-pointer to get the Gators within one.  The team held Immaculata scoreless (6-0) to close out the third, going into the final frame up five, 48-43.

Notre Dame kept up the pressure, outscoring the Mighty Macs 10-5 in the first half of the fourth.  After a good jumper by freshman Adrianna Fletcher with four-minutes to play, the Gators held their largest lead of the night, 62-54.

Upping the pace of the game, Immaculata held Notre Dame scoreless through a two-minute stretch to get within two points, with just over two minutes left in regulation. 

After missed free-throws on the Notre Dame end, saw Immaculata with possession and the chance to tie the game.  Mudiay took the ball coast-to-coast after intercepting a pass to help give Notre Dame a four-point cushion with just under two minute to play.

To seal the victory, Taylor downed two free-throws with 30 second left in the game.  In the final two minutes of the game Notre Dame recorded three defensive rebounds, two offensive rebounds, and one steal to help keep Immaculata from scoring.

Notre Dame now moves to 3-6 in conference play and 6-10 overall.  They will next host CSAC opponent, Rosemont College on Wednesday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m.  The Gators will then go on the road for two games before returning home for their final home stand of the season.
