Volleyball Falls Just Short Against Stevenson

Baltimore, MD - College of Notre Dame Volleyball came up just shy of upsetting Stevenson University on Tuesday evening.

Prior to the game the team took a few moments to recognize five outstanding players whom played their final home match with the program. Junior Katie Murphy (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) finished the night with 10 digs and two block assists. Ebony Rivers (Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) made 2 solo blocks and 3 block assists on the evening.  Captain Catherine Subrizi (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) led the team with 14 kills and 20 digs.  Middle Hitter India Scott (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) recorded eight kills and a solo block. Finally, Christina Kudrna (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) had 15 digs and a service ace at Libero.

The opening set was the most challenging for the Gators, with the Mustangs opening up a five point cushions. Stevenson’s cushion continued to widen and ultimately secured a first set victory. College of Notre Dame had an extra bounce in their step in the second set. Cory Santos (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) and Subrizi served the Gators to a quick 12-2 advantage. College of Notre Dame extended their lead to 20-11 on a Subrizi kill. Stevenson responded with a 9-1 run to pull the set to 21-20. College of Notre Dame used the energy of the fans to secure the win 25-21.

The Gators again opened up an early lead on the Mustangs earning eight points on Subrizi’s service rotation. College of Notre Dame continued to hit the ball well and expanded their cushion over Stevenson. Margie Maresca’s (Prince Frederick, MD/Huntington) fifth kill of the locked up the Gators 25-16 third set win.

The Mustangs forced a fifth set after defeating College of Notre Dame 25-13. The decisive fifth set had six ties, the last one coming at 10-10. Stevenson strung five points together to bring home the 3-2 victory.

Santos finished the match with 32 assists, 25 digs and three service aces. Maresca contributed 13 kills and 11 digs for the Gators.

College of Notre Dame travels to Colonial States Athletic Conference opponent Immaculata University on Thursday evening at 7p.m.
