Box Score Baltimore, Md. -- Immaculata University took an early 2-0 advantage in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup with Notre Dame of Maryland University, but the Gators rebounded and claimed the final three sets to defeat the Mighy Macs 3-2 in volleyball action.
After falling behind 2-0, Notre Dame took advantage of the ten-minute intermission before the third set to regroup and found themselves with a 19-14 lead in the middle of the set. A quick rally by the visitors pushed the score to 19-18, forcing a Gators timeout. Out of the quick break, Notre Dame rallied to pull out a 25-23 win to extend the match.
In the fourth set, the Gators jumped out early to take a 12-4 lead before an Immaculata timeout. This time the hosts continued their hot streak, pushing the lead to 22-11, and an eventual 25-13 win to force a deciding fifth set.
To open the deciding set, Notre Dame found themselves up 4-0 when IU called their first timeout. The Mighty Macs found momentum out of the break, rallying for six straight points to force a Notre Dame timeout. During the timeout, the Gators retook the game's energy and reclaimed the lead at 12-8. Even with another IU timeout, the visitors were unable to change the fate of the game as Notre Dame took the 15-9 fifth set victory to claim the match at 3-2.
The Gators were led offensively by senior
Cortney Silvis (Boonsboro, Md./Hagerstown Community College) with 19 kills. Juniors
Marylu Ortiz (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino), eight, and
Paige Kitchen (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown Community College), seven, added to the effort. Kitchen also posted 32 assists and three aces for the match. Ortiz chipped in with two aces.
Defensively, Notre Dame saw three players with double-digit digs, seeing freshman
Cleaya Antes (Carson, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) leading the way with 22. Silvis and Ortiz both contributed with 10. Freshman
Taylor Combs (Columbia, Md./Atholton) put up a solo block and three block assists with Kitchen adding a solo block and two block assists.
With the win, the Gators rise in the CSAC standings and find themselves in contention for a CSAC Playoff spot and will look to improve their standing Saturday as they travel to Marywood University for another conference tilt.
