Cathy Fisher was inducted into College of Notre Dame of Maryland's athletic department Hall of Fame on Friday evening, May 8th, 2009 as part of the department's annual end of the year athletics banquet.
Fisher began her coaching career at College of Notre Dame prior to the 2002 season. Over her seven year career, Fisher accumulated 43 victories and led the Gators to a 25-12 record in the All Women's College Conference (AWCC), and Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). Fisher guided the Gators to back-to-back AWCC championships in 2006 and 2007. In addition, she coached more than half a dozen All-Conference student-athletes, including two AWCC Most Outstanding Players and three AWCC Newcomers of the Year.
In her only season coaching the Gators in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC, now known as the Colonial States Athletic Conference) in the fall of 2007, Fisher led the team to a 6-4 conference record, narrowly missing a playoff berth.
Prior to her coaching career at College of Notre Dame, Fisher was a first class tennis student-athlete. She competed at Marywood University and compiled a 37-4 career record at number one singles and a 26-8 mark at number one doubles. She is a three-time Eastern States Athletic Conference number one singles champion, and was a NCAA National Tournament qualifier in 1989. Fisher was later inducted into the Marywood athletics Hall of Fame in 1999 for her on the court contributions and accomplishments as a Pacer.
Even more dynamic than Fisher's playing career is her personality and positive attitude toward both College of Notre Dame and all of the College's student-athlete's. It is because of her excellent coaching abilities that she could turn a non-athlete into a competitive tennis player. Her passion for tennis is infectious and because of that many of her student-athlete's have become lifelong tennis players.
Currently, Fisher is on the road to recovery after her diagnosis of breast cancer in the fall of 2008. It is because of her second to none wit and sense of humor, as well as her positive attitude toward life, that make Cathy Fisher an amazing person and inspiration to all who get to meet her.
To this day, Fisher still has a great love for the College and the athletic department. Her impact on the College of Notre Dame athletics family will be felt and appreciated for years to come.
