Hall of Fame
Rachel Barnes Dodge '97 was inducted into the 13th Hall of Fame class in 2003.
Barnes was a two-sport student-athlete that led her teams with a spirit of dedication and selflessness. Not only a leader of the field hockey and lacrosse teams, Barnes led the Notre Dame community with her commitment to others. She served as a student senator, Student Government Vice President, and President.
On the field, Barnes was a two-time captain of the lacrosse team and a captain of the field hockey team as a senior. Barnes came to Notre Dame with the intention of being a lacrosse attacker, but shifted to defense as a freshman. After returning as a sophomore, Barnes was needed in the midfield, where she would spend the rest of her career. Despite the shift in positions, it did not deter Barnes from being the best lacrosse player possible. Her efforts and skills were rewarded when she was named a Regional All-American in 1996.
Barnes was a still an offensive threat, scoring 58 goals and adding 32 assists in her career, numbers that had her ranked among the top ten until recently.
The ultimate honor of her four-year athletic career came in 1997 when she was named the state of Maryland’s NCAA Woman of the Year nominee. The award is given to one female student-athletes, regardless of what Division they compete in.
Barnes was an IWLCA Academic All-American in 1996, and a two-time GTW Academic All-District honoree. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and went on to medical school at the University of Maryland.
