Julie Desmond ’97 was inducted into the 15th Hall of Fame Class in 2005.

A two-sport athlete, Desmond left a mark on the Notre Dame field hockey record books that is still seen today. A four-year letterwinner in field hockey, Desmond set several school single-season and career records that have yet to be broken.

As a junior in 1995, Desmond set the single-season record for goals with 27 and points with 59. By the time she was finished with her career, she had set career records with 82 goals scored and 183 points scored. She is also fourth all-time at the College with 19 assists. Her records for goals and points remain Notre Dame records.

Desmond was a three-time Team MVP, earning that award as a freshman, sophomore and junior. She was named All-AWCC as a junior and senior, the first two years of the Conference. In 1995, as a junior, she had the honor of being named the first-ever AWCC Most Outstanding Player.

Desmond was a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association Regional All-American, earning Second Team honors as a freshman and sophomore and First Team recognition as a senior. Her exploits on the field helped Notre Dame to a 47-27 record during her four years, the best mark over any four-year span since 1990.

Also a great basketball player at Notre Dame, Desmond is one of eight players in the College’s history to top 1,000 points in a career, finishing with 1,058. While the records have since been surpassed, Desmond graduated as the College’s all-time leader in assists, with 310, and steals, with 229.

She was a member of the 1993-1994 team that set a school record for wins in a season with 17, a mark that was since tied by the 2002-2003 team. She earned All-AWCC as a junior and senior, and helped the Gators to a 55-39 record in her career.

Currently, Desmond resides in Frederick, Md., and is an Instructional Assistant and Director of Before-and-After Care at Monocacy Valley Montessori Public Charter School, the only charter school in the State of Maryland.
