Elizabeth Hoisington was a 1940 graduate from College of Notre Dame of Maryland and inducted into the Notre Dame Hall of Fame in 1990. ,

A field hockey, basketball and tennis athlete, she majored in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics.  A major part of the Notre Dame community, the Distinguished Alumna Award is named in her honor.  She also served on the Notre Dame Board of Trustees from 1985-1990. 

After graduation, Hoisington would enlist into the Women's Army Auxiliary Corp. in 1942, the first opportunities for women during war time other than nursing. Commissioned in 1943, she would become a second lieutenant, serving in France after the D-Day invasion.  Continuing her service after World War II, she would continue to rise the ranks, eventually reaching the rank of colonel in the Women's Army Corp. 

In 1970, President Richard Nixon would select Hoisington as one of the first two women ever to achieve the rank of Brigadier General.  She would retire from the military in 1971.

At the age of 88, she would pass away in 2007 and is buried at the Arlington National Cemetery.
