Erin Sturgis was a four-year lacrosse and soccer student-athlete at Notre Dame. Sturgis finished her careers in both lacrosse and soccer in the top-ten in many statistical categories in both sports.
In lacrosse, Sturgis’ 101 career assists put her on top of that category all-time at Notre Dame, while her 275 career points place her third all-time. Sturgis’ 174 career goals place her sixth all-time at Notre Dame. In addition, Sturgis also appears in Notre Dame’s top-ten career leader list in ground balls (173), draw controls (87), and caused turnovers (86). Sturgis’ 45 assists in 2002 are still tops in program history for a season.
Sturgis earned IWLCA Regional All-America honors in 2000 (First Team) and in 2001 (second team). In addition, Sturgis earned All-AWCC First Team status in each of her four years, and was named the AWCC’s Most Outstanding Lacrosse Player in 2000 & 2002.
“Erin was one of the most upbeat and positive student-athletes I have ever worked with,” said coach Falen. “In addition to being a great athlete, she never seemed to let anything get her down, on or off the field.”
Sturgis’ soccer accomplishments are just as impressive as her lacrosse ones. Sturgis accumulated 25 goals and 36 assists in her soccer career at Notre Dame, leading the team to AWCC Championships in each of her four seasons. Her 86 career points place her seventh all-time in program history, while her 36 assists put her second. In addition, Sturgis’ 25 goals put her in a tie for ninth all-time. Sturgis holds the single season record for assists in a season with 18 in her senior season of 2001.
A two-year soccer team captain, Sturgis was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2001 and was also named the AWCC Most Outstanding Player of the Year as well that season. She earned AWCC Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore in 1999, and was an AWCC First Team selection in 2000 and 2001.
Sturgis has stayed involved with the sport of lacrosse after graduating from Notre Dame, having served as the Director of Chapter Relations for US Lacrosse since 2005. She is also in her first season as a volunteer assistant coach of the Notre Dame lacrosse team. “Erin brings wonderful energy and knowledge to our team as a volunteer assistant coach,” noted coach Falen.
Her coaching efforts helped Notre Dame reach the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs this season after the team missed the league postseason in 2009.
